On Oct. 13 to 16, The Rag-NERD-rok crew attended New York Comic Con, the convention where dreams and nightmares come true in equal measure. In this episode, we’ll give you the rundown of our experiences at the con, including tales of how we met the stars (and were shot down), the panels we attended, and the unimaginably long lines we waited on. Later, we’ll give our reviews of this year’s NYCC, and Erik presents a segment of interviews he conducted with cosplayers at the Javits Center. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and pack your own food, because Comic Con is happening again on this week’s episode of Rag-NERD-rok!

(Show notes after the break.)

I. Cold Opening – The Line to Hell (00:00:00)

Our heroes find themselves on a long line, and none of them knows what it’s for. Not an uncommon occurrence at New York Comic Con, or in the vestibule of Hell itself.

II. Introduction (00:01:00)

Meyer introduces Episode 011, and Ed talks about the painful reconstructive surgery he underwent in Switzerland to reconstitute himself after being two women during the last episode. We gird ourselves to discuss the pains and pleasures that Mother Con in her infinite, sadistic generosity, bestowed upon us.

IIIa. Thursday (00:02:51)

ED: Walking around the show floor without the crowds, playing lots of game demos.

IIIb. Friday (00:04:40)

MEYER and ERIK: Going to the live Jay and Silent Bob Get Old podcast.

ED: Seeing the Felicia Day panel, asking her if she’d go out with him and getting re-jiggity-jected.

RYAN: Going to Mark Hamill’s panel, getting to hear his awesome stories about his career as an actor.

ALEX: Final Fantasy XIII-2 art panel, and playing the FFXIII-2 Demo.

IIIc. Saturday (00:20:08)

MEYER: The Attack The Block movie panel, and getting free autographed posters afterwards.

ERIK: The awesome announcements and features shown off at the Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 panel.

ED: Indie stand-up comedians promoting their film at the Tell Your Friends panel.

RYAN: Cory Doctorow and Brian David Johnson discussing the future at the Prototyping Sci-Fi panel.

ALEX: Graham Chapman is resurrected (in voice only) to narrate his own animated biopic! Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman hosting the A Liar’s Autobiography panel. You can check out the crowd at this panel singing the first part of “Sit On My Face” here!

IIId. Sunday (00:34:35)

MEYER: Playing the Mass Effect 3 demo, and enjoying the new game play.

ERIK: Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Bupkis. Erik didn’t go on Sunday. Radiate your displeasure at him until he feels an appropriate level of guilt.

ED: Talking to celebrities such as Mark Hamill, Kevin Sorbo, and Elisha Dushku, but not paying for their autographs.

RYAN: Seeing the Early Works of Jim Henson panel, and

ALEX: Censorship in the Comic Book World, The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and speed-addled comic execs testifying before the Senate, all wrapped up in one panel!

IV. Ratings and Reviews (00:48:50)

In which we discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of New York Comic Con 2011, and give it a rating on our own scale of Glorious Deaths in Battle.

MEYER: 3 / 5 Glorious Deaths in Battle

ED: 3.5 / 5 Glorious Deaths in Battle

ERIK: 3.5 / 5 Glorious Deaths in Battle

RYAN: 4 / 5 Glorious Deaths in Battle

ALEX: 4 / 5 Glorious Deaths in Battle

V. Erik’s Cosplay Diaries (01:00:55)

Erik braves the crowds at Comic Con to talk to a few awesome fans who came in costume! He talks to Batman villain The Joker, Waldo of Where’s Waldo? fame, globetrotting criminal mastermind Carmen Sandiego, and The Mario Brothers to ask some hard-hitting questions about their experiences at Comic Con.
