It’s time for another interview with The Rag-NERD-rok Crew! This week, we sit down with Star Wars artist Joe Hogan for a discussion about his work, his methodology, and of course, his love of everything Star Wars! Later, our friends Will and Chris join us to sample dried flakes of the dreaded Bhut Jolokia pepper, a demon plant with a Scoville rating of more than one million. Finally, Ryan has written a little story for the rest of the gang, but there are a few blanks that need filling in. Join us for an episode full of spicy segments, dirty jokes, and man-on-Wookiee-on-Yoda action!

(Show notes after the break.)

Joe Hogan, Star Wars Artist

This week’s guest, Joe Hogan, has been an active artist in the Star Wars fan community since before he graduated from SVA in 2008. To name only a few of his many projects, he has contributed artwork to TheForce.net, the fan film Hughes the Force, and Topps, which was his first official gig. For the past two years, he has chronicled his quest to become an official Star Wars artist on his blog, and has gained a huge following on DeviantArt.

In our chat with Joe, we ask him about what enticed him to become a Star Wars artist, what he loves about the franchise, and what parts of it are his favorites to draw. We also discuss some of his recent art projects, as well as some upcoming work that you can look for in 2012. Finally, he gives us an inside peek into his artistic process, and tells us all about the great deals he has on commission work for the holiday season, since he’s running a number of specials to help pay for Christmas gifts. Here’s what he’s offering:

  • Sketch Card (same size as the cards he does for Topps): $20 (Buy three, get one free)
  • Digital Sketch Card (high-res drawings of whatever characters you want): $20 each.
  • Cinematic Illustration (a scene of your choice, drawn as if it were a still from a movie / animation): $50.

The Graaz: According to Joe, The Graaz is a creature in the Star Wars universe that is of similar size and disposition to a Rancor, except that it is made entirely of rocks. The Graaz is able to regenerate damage during a fight by drawing more rocks into itself, making it an incredibly difficult opponent to destroy.

IV. Capsaicin Challenge (00:48:22)

In this segment, Ryan, Meyer, Chris, Will and Erik sprinkle insane amounts of ridiculously spicy ghost pepper chili flakes on their pizza, suffering the painful consequences for your listening pleasure. As if that weren’t enough, they then proceed to drink straight jolokia sauce, made from the same pepper, which has a Scoville rating of more than 1,000,000. Can these poor fools stand the heat? Listen in to find out!

Stay tuned for pictures from The Capsaicin Challenge, coming soon!

V. Rag-NERD-Lib (01:13:39)
