In this month’s episode, four members of The Rag-NERD-rok Crew step up to answer one of the toughest questions facing Marvel geeks for the past fifty years: just who is the best X-Men character? Join the guys and special guest host Derek for a debate to determine which hero—or villain—fits the bill. Then, after the break, our good friend Will joins us for a special Rag-NERD-rok version of The Newlywed Game where Ed and Meyer compete to see which one of them knows him better. Finally, we share some very special emails we received from loyal listener Robert P.

(Show notes after the break)

I. Cold Opening – Shhhhhh! (00:00:00)

Derek shows up to record the episode, but the guys are a bit distracted.

II. DEBATE! The Most Excellent X-Man (00:00:42)

Ryan and Derek moderates a debate about which X-Men character in the 616 Universe is the best. The debaters and their characters of choice are:

Meyer: Nightcrawler
Ed: Magneto
Erik: Storm
Alex: Gambit

The debate opens with a one minute statement from each participant. Then, each Rag-NERD-rok Crew member will have one minute to answer the following questions, with one 30-second rebuttal for each question:

1.) X-Men members need teamwork to succeed. What is your hero’s most positive aspect in regards to teamwork, and how does it help the team?
2.) Imagine your character is taking out an ad in a personal column or filling out a bio for a dating website. What do you say about him or her in order to attract a potential date?
3.) The best characters need the best backstories. What makes your character’s backstory compelling?
4.) How many normal (non-mutated, un-augmented) humans armed with military ordnance could your character take in a direct assault? Does your character have any weaknesses they could exploit to defeat him / her?
5.) If you could trade lives with your character for a week (bodies, powers, relationships), would you want to do so? Why or why not? How do you feel this makes him / her a stronger character?
6.) Does your X-Man have a solo title, and if not, could they support one? Why or why not?

To conclude, each participant gives a one-minute closing statement to summarize his argument. Listen in to judge for yourselves who won!

III. The Newly-Will Game (00:52:08)

Meyer and Ed compete to see who knows Will better by trying to match his answers to the following questions:

  1. What is Will’s favorite ice cream flavor?
  2. What would Will most like to receive as a birthday gift?
  3. What is Will’s favorite animal?
  4. What is Will’s favorite meal?
  5. Which Sesame Street character frightened Will the most as a child?
  6. Who is Will’s favorite X-Man?
  7. If you ranked Will’s bedroom prowess as an Olympic sport, would he be a sprinter, a javelin thrower, or a marathon man?
  8. If Will could be reincarnated as any famous painting, which one would it be?
  9. If Will had the opportunity to assassinate any president, alive or dead, which one would it be?
  10. What Green Day song would Will want played at his funeral?

IV. Outro (01:20:04)

EMAILS:

#1

Hello podcasters. I have recognized that in the 31’st episode you mentioned my name. I hope you realize that by doing that, that you have summoned the Meyer boner connoisseur of the third layer of hell. You know. The level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater(don’t try and guess why he is in there). Expect an email later in the week from him.

First off, I must thank you for freeing me from the 3rd layer of hell. Satan and I weren’t on the best of terms. Mecha-Hitler was nice though. So back onto the subject at hand. The elusive Meyer boner’s natural habitat are The plains of the podcast, and the Urban Conventions. It’s diet consists of Rocks from Vulcan, and Mountain Dew Code Red. To draw out this creature you must bait a stick with the first issue of Batman, still in the cover. For more information go to “Thisin’tarealwebsite.FU”.
With love
Robert P.
