It’s the 1930s, and The Dust Bowl has driven many farmers from their homes in America’s heartland to the fields of California, where there’s work to be had. When the blight reaches the small town of Bryson Springs, CA, wiping out the year’s orange crop, hundreds of so-called “Okies” are left to face a miserable existence in a shantytown built on the outskirts of the desiccated grove. But the suffering in Bryson Springs goes far beyond the mundane: something horrifying has taken root in the arid California soil, and a predator beyond comprehension stalks its prey among the dead orange trees. Now, a gruesome death has drawn an FBI agent, his prisoner, an enterprising reporter, and a communist orator into town, but can they figure out what evils plague the destitute farm workers of Bryson Springs, or will they become the latest quarry of a power that defies imagination?
