In this week’s episode, Ed has been consumed by a horrifying transformation that split him into two women, our guests, Allyson and Alicia! They join the rest of the Rag-NERD-rok Crew for a walk down memory lane to revisit all those fondly remembered franchises from our childhoods that are now making a comeback. Why is this happening? Who is responsible? And what, exactly, makes a franchise reboot successful? We tackle these questions and more in our discussion about nostalgia. Later, Alex and Meyer pay tribute to the “Gears of War” video game series, and we read some very special comments that are just too “good” to be posted on the site. Enjoy!

(Show notes after the break.)

I. Cold Opening: “1-800-EXORCIST” (00:00:00)

Unhappy father Zach is constantly at the mercy of the malevolent entity possessing his newborn son, so he contacts the professionals for help.

II. Introduction (00:00:58)

III. Remember Nostalgia? (00:03:04)

A discussion about the TV shows and video games that used to be big when we were kids, and are now reemerging into the popular consciousness. IV. “Gears of War” Retrospective, by Alex and Meyer (00:38:57)

Alex and Meyer look back at the “Gears of War” trilogy, third-person shooters that changed the video gaming world developed by Epic Games. First, Alex traces the series’ epic story arc through all three games, and discusses how the developers successfully blended camp, strong characterization and challenging game play to create a unique experience. Then, Meyer discusses the mechanical elements that made the series great, as well as its profound influence on the rest of the video gaming world.

  • So I definitely just got the same spam message that ends in “big thumb up” – it made me laugh.

  • Derek

After I listened to this episode, I immediately prepared a rant in opposition to MANY of you opinions presented in this episode…..but then I realized that it’s times like these where our age difference is much more apparent, so I let it go to write at a different time….then I forgot. 🙂

On a separate note, I feel that Ed missed the recording due to his getting on the wrong train from NYC and arriving in CT….only to be held at knife-point by a team of radical garden gnomes and if not for his wits and a weak bladder, he would still be in their clutches.

    • Alex

I’d agree with you, Derek, but that would imply that Ed has wits. And there’s no concrete proof for that just yet.
