This week’s episode of Rag-NERD-rok is a continuation of the discussion we began last week covering geek culture in The 20th Century. We’ll talk about the rise of “The Big Three” of sci-fi, Orson Wellesinfamous War of the Worlds broadcast, Universal Studios’ iconic horror films of the 1930s and ’40s, Walt Disney’s early work, and The Golden Age of comic books. After the break, we conduct an off-the-cuff Will interview, plumbing the depths of his psyche with the most random questions we can conceive of.

This is the first installment of a four-part retrospective that we like to call Geek Century, in which we examine the evolution of nerd culture in the past hundred years. In this episode, we take a look at some examples of fantasy, science fiction and horror from 1900 to 1925: namely, the works of L. Frank Baum, George Méliès, H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Then, we (finally!) play some voice mails that our listeners have left us, and are left to deal with the psychological traumas they inflict. Put on your beanies and get ready for a blast from the geeky past!

In the spirit of the holiday season, we at Rag-NERD-rok would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our listeners of what’s important: Star Wars! Whether your preference is for the Original Trilogy or the Prequels, the Expanded Universe or the cartoons, this week’s episode is a celebration our favorite galaxy far, far away. And what would a Star Wars holiday episode be without mentioning that beloved Wookiee feast, Life Day? (There. We mentioned it.) Join Meyer, our resident Star Wars fanboy, along with the rest of the Rag-NERD-rok Crew and special guest host Will Wohlsen, as we take the ultimate journey into appreciating the franchise.

And may The Force be with you, always.

It’s time for another interview with The Rag-NERD-rok Crew! This week, we sit down with Star Wars artist Joe Hogan for a discussion about his work, his methodology, and of course, his love of everything Star Wars! Later, our friends Will and Chris join us to sample dried flakes of the dreaded Bhut Jolokia pepper, a demon plant with a Scoville rating of more than one million. Finally, Ryan has written a little story for the rest of the gang, but there are a few blanks that need filling in. Join us for an episode full of spicy segments, dirty jokes, and man-on-Wookiee-on-Yoda action!

In this week’s episode of Rag-NERD-rok, we discuss some of our favorite independently published video games, the current market for new intellectual properties, and the future of video gaming. We’ll touch on some of our favorite indie titles, such as Braid, Limbo, Minecraft, The Binding of Isaac, and Dwarf Fortress in order to examine the ways in which independent game makers are changing the face of the industry. Later, we each pitch an idea for a new Choose Your Own Adventure style web comic so that you, the listening audience, can choose which one you would like to see produced. Finally, we round off our episode with a word from our sponsor, Big Al’s Quantum Quik-Fix!
