When we last left our band of Investigators, they had tracked down the source of the mysterious break-ins and assaults in Lancaster, PA: a Germanic holiday gremlin called a Belsnickel who comes as a dire warning to those in mortal danger. In order to keep the townspeople alive past Christmas, they’ll have to face down an ancient witch and her terrifying “pet.” While they tool up for the confrontation, Agent Lundy receives word that the FBI is hot on the trail of Frank Lamont after a former ally of theirs turned state’s evidence, and he decides to join the group in Pennsylvania. In order to gain more intel on their foe, the group summons the nightmarish Carriage Driver, who gives them a number of possibly useful spells. Can Frank and company infiltrate the crypt where the witch sleeps, defeat her and her holiday horror, and escape with their lives? In the winter of 1920, a group of explorers set out from England to the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago to find the body of James Blackbourne, an aristocratic world traveler who died while working as a mining surveyor in the arctic desert. Blackbourne’s older brother, an academic socialite, has financed the expedition in order to learn his sibling’s fate, gathering a group of experts to assist him on his quest. There’s Anatoly Markov, former gamekeeper for the Russian Czar and newly expatriated arctic survival expert. Warren Appleton—of the Boston Appletons—was chosen for his completely legitimate credentials in a stunning variety of fields. Finally, there’s Kristopher Blackbourne, a distant cousin of the family working as a private detective in San Francisco. Armed with their wits and accompanied by their teams of sled dogs, these brave Investigators set out into the polar night to discover what befell James Blackbourne and his fellow surveyors. The horror they find in an abandoned shelter might just drive them insane, if it doesn’t kill them first.

In this week’s Actual Play, the prisoners from The Big Break finally put their plan into motion and mount a daring escape. First, however, they must recover the warden’s security passkey, without which they cannot access the dry docks where submarines from the surface make regular deliveries. In the warden’s personal quarters, they discover another prisoner, one mysteriously immune to the alien creatures that have turned other inmates into hyper-loyal, super strong footsoldiers, and rescue him from solitary confinement. When the escapees trigger the warden’s dead man switch on a hidden booby trap, they must find an alternate route out of the prison complex, one which will lead them to confront the prison doctor and a squad of alien hybrids in hopes of boarding the one escape sub. Can they defeat the hybrids and pilot the sub to freedom, or will they find themselves sealed in a watery tomb? Listen to find out!
